Sun Ten Laboratories

Sun Ten Laboratories USA has the primary goal of giving Chinese medicine practitioners in the US access to the high-quality products produced by our factory in Taiwan.

Here in the US we aim to continue the legacy of Sun Ten in Taiwan which emphasizes customer service, education and research.

For nearly seven decades, Sun Ten has produced the highest quality herb extracts for more than 20 countries including the United States, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Switzerland, Germany and England.

Sun Ten continues to meet the unique specifications mandated by each government, ensuring product safety and quality for herbal products.

Producing the highest quality herbs starts with the best source herbs, but also requires a manufacturing process that gets the most out the source materials. Sun Ten is a leading manufacturer of Chinese herb formula and single herb products. As the oldest herb granule production company in Taiwan, Sun Ten has the experience, resources and scientific infrastructure to manufacture products that meet the detailed specifications required to meet the standards of the various countries to which they export and the private label companies for whom they produce products.

This high standard of production and quality assurance has allowed Sun Ten's herbs to be chosen by several universities in both the East and the West when conducting scientific clinical and research studies using Chinese herb extracts.

Eleven Quality Control tests are routinely executed to ensure the safety and quality of Sun Ten's products. Each batch is approved by the Head of Quality Assurance to insure that Sun Ten's products meet international safety and quality standards. Only then is a Certificate of Analysis issued for each production batch.

About Our Company

Sun Ten Pharmaceutical Company Ltd. was founded by Dr. Hong-yen Hsu in Taipei, Taiwan in 1946. As a young man, Dr. Hsu studied in Japan, where he earned a doctorate in pharmacognosy (the branch of pharmacology concerned with crudedrugs of plant and animal origin). After returning home to his native Taiwan, he and his pharmacist-wife, Ruth Lin Run Hsu, established the Sun Ten Pharmaceutical Company, the first company in Taiwan to produce concentrated granules for the Chinese medicine community.

In the decades that followed, Dr. Hsu played an increasingly important scientific and educational role in the Chinese medicine world of Taiwan. He served as the country's first director of the Drug Control and Health Administration, a position equivalent to the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration in the United States.

His writings, lectures, research and manufacturing operations were all guided by one central belief: that Eastern and Western medicine could work in partnership for the benefit of humanity. At Sun Ten, this conviction led to the merging of time tested traditions and new technologies, such as the development of the concentrated granule form of centuries-old Chinese herbal formulas.

Dr. Hsu championed the highest standards in safety, cleanliness, operating procedures and quality control and these were incorporated at all of Sun Ten manufacturing facilities. The Taiwanese government recognized these exemplary standards when it presented Sun Ten with the first GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) recognition ever given a manufacturer of Chinese herbal medicine.

In 1975, Sun Ten began exporting to Japan and was the first herb extract manufacturer in Taiwan whose products qualified for reimbursement through the Japanese Health Insurance Plan.

Sun Ten began operations in the United States by opening a facility in Irvine California in 1991.

In 1996, the Malaysian Drug Control Administration issued an import drug license to Sun Ten products. With establishment of Sun Ten Pharmaceutical MFG (M) SDN BHD in Malaysia, Sun Ten entered the Malaysian and Singaporean markets.

In 2013, Sun Ten received the highest-ranking GMP certification (A1 TGA PIC/S) from the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration. This world-class manufacturing standard is comparable to that required of manufacturers of western pharmaceuticals.

Title: Practical Methods of Formulating and Compounding with Herbal Granule Extracts

By Dr. Greg Zimmerman

Herbal extract granules, which are commonly used in Taiwan and the USA, are a manufactured product. They have a property and an extraction ratio that makes them different from natural raw herbs. Thereby, the methods by which they are formulated and compounded are also different. This is an important topic because many practitioners use herbal extract granules, but the methods of formulation and compounding using them are not necessarily taught in Oriental Medicine Colleges.

Course Goals

The purpose of this course is to teach the common methods used, primarily in Taiwan, to formulate and compound Chinese herbal granule extract formulas. Since there are unique methods of formulation and compounding herbal extract granules, the course will go further and share common methods used to modify, combine, and expand finished product formulas with single herbal extract granules needed to render comprehensive formulas that best address the unique pattern of illness of the patient.
